Assistant Coach
Justin Wieck now enters his fifth season as assistant coach on the men’s basketball coaching staff in 2018-19. He was named to the post on May 12, 2014. In his four seasons at MSUM, the Dragons have posted an impressive overall record of 96-38 (.717).
In 2017-18 senior guard Tanner Kretchman capped off a stellar career by earning All-NSIC second team honors and setting the school's all-time record for career assists.
In 2016-17, an experienced group of upperclassmen helped post a 24-6 record and win the NSIC Regular Season Championship and the NSIC North Division title for the fourth consecutive season. MSUM made its third consecutive NCAA Tournament, marking three out of three years since the arrival of Wieck. For the second consecutive season, the Dragons posted a 19-3 mark in NSIC play. MSUM spent four weeks ranked in the National Association of Basketball Coaches poll, including its highest ranking of No. 19. Senior guard Aaron Lien was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Year.
In 2015-16, the experienced MSUM team posted a 30-6 record and won the NSIC North Division title for the third consecutive season. MSUM’s postseason run included a trip to the NSIC Tournament Championship game and another NCAA Tournament appearance, the second in Wieck’s two years on staff. The Dragons posted a 19-3 conference record and recorded a school record 16 straight victories during the season. MSUM spent 19 straight weeks ranked in the top 10 in the NABC National poll, including a #7 final ranking.
Wieck helped the Dragon men to a historic season in 2014-15. The Dragons finished a school record 35-4, won the NCAA Central Region and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite 8 for the first time in school history. The Dragons were NSIC Co-Champions and also won the NSIC North Division for a second straight year. The Dragons also advanced to the NSIC Tournament championship game. Senior point guard Jordan Riewer was an All-American and also named the NSIC Co-Player of the Year. The Dragons set statistical school records in field goals made, field goal percentage, three-point field goals made, free throws made, and free throw percentage during the season.
Wieck spent the previous two seasons as the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Jamestown, compiling a 32-31 record. He coached four players to a total of five all-conference honors, including four first team all-conference selections, and two All-American selections.
In just his second year at the helm, Wieck led the Jimmies to the inaugural NSAA regular season and tournament championship during the 2013-14 season. Jamestown finished with a 17-12 overall record, including a 7-1 mark in conference action. The Jimmies enjoyed a 10-game winning streak in the middle of the season, and won 12 of the final 13 games of the year, to claim the two titles. Wieck was named NSAA conference coach of the year.
Wieck had little time to prepare for his first season at Jamestown, as he was hired on Aug. 13, 2012. His first season at Jamestown produced an NAIA National Tournament appearance and a second place finish in the Association of Independent Institutions (Aii) Tournament.
Wieck came to Jamestown after serving as an assistant coach for two years at NCAA Division II Northern State University (Aberdeen, SD), from 2010-2012.
Previous to his role at Northern State, Wieck spent four years as video coordinator at his alma mater, the University of Iowa, from 2006-2010. Wieck worked with Steve Alford and Todd Lickliter, both National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Coach of the Year recipients as well as current Dragons Head Coach Chad Walthall.
Wieck assisted the Iowa coaches in preparing opponent scouting reports along with breaking down Hawkeye practices and game films. Wieck was in charge of on-campus recruiting, helping Iowa land two All-Big Ten freshmen honorees in the 2009 class, along with a top 20 recruiting class in 2010.
While at Iowa, Wieck served as assistant camp director for Iowa Summer Basketball Camps, including on-campus and satellite camps within the state. He also assisted in academic monitoring and community outreach for the Hawkeye program.

In Wieck’s senior season, the Hawkeyes posted a 25-9 overall record and won the 2006 Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis. He was named an Academic All-Big Ten selection.
