MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons wrestling team was led by first year Head Coach
Kris Nelson to a sweep of Sioux Falls (S.D.) and Morningside (Iowa) as the team opened the 2009-10 season Tuesday night.
Nelson earned his first two wins at the helm of a program, as the team topped Sioux Falls 51-0 and had a 30-11 victory over Morningside. On the day the Dragons had six pins, four major decisions and a technical fall.
The Dragons had five pins in the first dual against Sioux Falls. Junior
Brady Schneeberger led the falls with a pin of Tom Thompson at 141 pounds.
Tim Johnson, at heavyweight, wrapped up the Dragons falls with a pin just 24 seconds into the match against Andrew Harmoney. The Dragons also tallied falls at 149 by
Derek Bomstad (4:51),
Jacob McLean at 174 (4:10) and
Roger Sirek wrestling 184 (4:29).
Corey Ulmer picked up a technical fall with a 17-0 win over Doug Thomspon at 125 pounds.
Evan Forde (133),
Tallen Wald (157),
Tyler Kivel (165) and
Tayler Yliniemi (197) each won their respective match.
In the second dual, the Dragons topped the Mustangs with one pin and three major decisions in their 30-11 victory. Johnson earned his second pin of the day at heavyweight, taking down Alex Will at 6:48.
Forde at 133 pounds, won a 9-1 major decision over Jake McManigal and was followed by Bomstad at 149 who took his match 12-1. The third major decision was awarded to
Tyler Kivel as he defeated Matt Mueller 9-0 at 165 pounds.
MSUM will wrestle at the Cobber Open at Concordia (Moorhead, Minn.) on Sat., Nov. 21. The open will begin at 9 a.m.
