MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons wrestling team had five athletes make it to the final match of the Cobber Open in their respective weights on Saturday afternoon.
Evan Forde led the Dragons as he claimed the only title by MSUM at 133 pounds as he topped St. Cloud State's Shane McQuade 5-4 in the championship match. He started the day with a technical fall where he topped Jamestown's Rene Regel, 20-2. He also had two other match wins on the day.
Four Dragons took second in their respective weights including:
Corey Ulmer at 125,
Brady Schneeberger at 141,
Tallen Wald at 157 and
Tim Johnson at heavyweight.
Ulmer had two major decisions that led up tot he championship match, where he topped Ridgewater Community College's Nate Fredrich, 11-2 and Kylon Zumpf (unattached), 13-0.
Schneeberger had two pins and a major decision on his 3-1 day. He pinned Ridgewater's Josh Anderson in 1:46 and Nathen Schweitzer of Dickinson State in 4:13. His major decision came over Justin Home, 11-2.
Wald had three close decisions winning by one in the first round and by two in the second and semi final rounds before losing to SCSU's John Sundgren in the championship.
Johnson suffered his first loss of the season in the heavyweight championship match to SCSU's Jake Kahnke. He earned a pin in the semifinals round as he pinned unattached Chris Brassell in 2:00.
Taylor Yliniemi took third at 197 pounds while
Tyler Kivel went into the semifinals round at 165 pounds but had to bow out due to injury.
MSUM will host the Dragon Open on Dec. 5 with matches beginning at 9 a.m. at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
