MOORHEAD, Minn. - A strong first half didn’t transition into the second half as the youth of the Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team was out matched by the veteran experience of the NCAA DI North Dakota State Bison as the Dragons suffered a 78-66 exhibition game loss Tuesday night.
The Bison went on an early lead as they went up 10-2 three minutes into the game as two three-pointers by Inger Hodgson gave the home team the fast lead. The Dragons came back within two points on three-consecutive jumpers, two coming from Meghan Rettke and the other hit by Angie Jetvig.
NDSU went up again 17-10 before the Dragons went on a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 20-17. Freshman Kaycee Charette and Marissa Yernatich both played a big role in getting the Dragons back to pace with the Bison including a combined 12 points in the first half.
The Bison took the lead for good as they broke the 24-24 tied with just over six minutes to play in the first half. NDSU led at half 34-30.
Alison Nash-Gerlach scored 17 of her game leading 21 points in the second half but it wasn’t enough to carry the Dragons to a victory as NDSU’s experience on the perimeter and a 63 percent field-goal percentage gave the Bison the win.
The Dragons grabbed one more board than the Bison, 29-28, and also hit 91.7 percent of their free-throw attempts. Yernatich and Charette each had five rebounds, to lead the team, while Jetvig and Betsy Dickson had four a piece. Jetvig trailed Nash-Gerlach with 14 points and Charette also broke double-figures with 10 points.
The Dragons will open their regular season against Minot State on Monday, Nov. 16 at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
