ST. JOSEPH, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead swimming and diving team edged St. Benedict's University on Friday evening, 127-97.
The Dragons start was the key to victory as the team's relays took first and second place in the 200 yard medley relay. The 'A' team swam the race in 1:51.84 while the 'B' group finished in 1:56.04.
Lisa Black led the way for the first team setting her team's pace with a 28.82 50-yard swim, Ann Guswelle and
Cassie Jensen followed with 30.70 and 26.97 times, while
Victoria Honetschlager made the difference for the Dragons with a 25.35 leg to add to the four-second margin of victory.
The Blazers, a strong freestyle swimming team gave the Dragons tough competition in the freestyle events but could not out-swim MSUM in two races.
MSUM's Jess Tauber out-swam SBU's fastest short distance freestyler, Isabel Pennings, by one-hundreth of a second to win the 50 yard freestyle event, 25.49. Black also topped the competition in the 100 yard freestyle swim with a time of 55.73.
Guswelle continued her dominance in the 200 yard breaststroke as she finished six seconds ahead of her competition in a time of 2:30.38.
Other top finishes for the Dragons included Claire Caron's first place finish in the 200 yard butterfly in a time of 2:17.40.
Kayla Koenig continued to dominate her competition on the 1-meter diving board as she earned 351.06 points to take first place.
The Dragons will see St. Ben's in competition again on Sat. with the dual beginning at 1 p.m.
