Wrestlers Wrap-Up 2009 With Dragon Open

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead hosted over 230 collegiate wrestlers on Saturday at the Dragon Open where the Dragons claimed one championship along with nine others who placed in the top six.

Freshman heavyweight, Jacob Bruns claimed the sole Dragon Open title for the Dragons as he lead the field in the White Division (underclassmen). In the final match, Bruns won a 7-2 decision over Tom Bouressa of Concordia (Minn.). On his way to the title match he won two decisions, the first against Jordan Stetson of Mary (N.D.), 5-0 and North Dakota State's Joe Arthur, 7-4.

Tim Johnson led the Dragons at heavyweight in the Red Division (upperclassmen) as he claimed second place. He took second to NCAA DI Minnesota freshman Tony Nelson, 4-2, after he earned a pinned in his first round and won a decision 5-1 in the semifinals.

At 125 pounds, Corey Ulmer took third place as he worked his way through the wrestleback rounds of the Red Division after being upset in the first round to a wrestler from Augsburg. He won the third place match with a 4-2 decision.

Tallen Wald also wrestled for third place but came up on the short end of a 4-2 decision to Marcus Edginton of Augustana. In the wrestleback semifinals Wald topped North Dakota State's Tyler Wells, 11-8.

Junior Jon Swart wrestled his first match of the season as he moved from heavyweight to 197 pounds this season. He took fourth place in the Red Division.

The Dragons had four fifth place finishers and one sixth place finisher. The fifth place winners included Evan Forde (Red-133), Brady Schneeberger (Red-141), Jacob McLean (White-174) and Brian Woefel (Red-197). Freshman Brennan Novacek placed sixth in the White Division at 165 pounds.
