PETERS RESPONDS TO NCAA RELEASE

| By:

MSUM and Dragon Athletics hold its student-athletes to a high standard of conduct.  The Dragons are committed to the beliefs and principles of NCAA DII Athletics.

Investigations of the incident reported by the NCAA were conducted independently of athletics by Campus Security and Judicial Affairs.

A student-athlete who chose to attend the national championships on his own initiative during his spring break to cheer and support his teammates was arrested for public intoxication in the early morning hours after the closing ceremonies of the Winter Sports Festival.

All legal charges against this student-athlete were dropped within 24 hours of the arrest and there are no pending charges to the best of our knowledge.

The independent investigations resulted in no charges of student-misconduct against the student-athlete by judicial affairs.

Dragon Athletic Director Doug Peters and Dragon Wrestling Coach Keenan Spiess did not dismiss the student-athlete from the wrestling team.     The student's athletic scholarship was not renewed for the 2009-10 academic year.

Results of the independent investigations resulted in an appeal to the NCAA which was denied.

“We are working with 18-22 year olds and we are going to deal with lapses of judgment from time to time.  It is our responsibility to use this as a teachable moment with all of our student-athletes .” stated MSUM Athletic Director Doug Peters. “Dragon Athletics does not condone the actions of this student-athlete.  At the same time I don't believe this is a case of lack of institutional control. “
