Dragons Volleyball Takes Match One of Comfort INNvitational

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Freshman Heidi Lensing and junior setter Leigh Splittstoesser led the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons (4-2) to the team's fourth win of the season, topping Texas A&M Commerce in a four set match at the Comfort INNVitational, 19-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-17.
Lensing led the Dragons with 15 kills, hitting a hot .423. Splittstoesser had 45 assists in the match and also notched two service aces.
The Dragons suffered a first set loss, 25-19 but rebounded quickly in the second set with a 25-17 win. MSUM created separation from Commerce early in the second set as back-to-back kills by Andrea Rachel and Laura Tvrdik gave the Dragons a 5-1 edge. The team lead by as much as ten points in the second set as a service ace by Splittstoesser put MSUM up 16-6.
In the third set, the Dragons came back from a 12-5 deficit to tie the game at 16. The Lions aided the Dragons' comeback with eight attack errors in the final 18 points of the game, which also included five kills by Tvrdik. She ended the match with 13 kills in 24 attacks.
Lensing sealed the win for the Dragons as three of the final five MSUM points scored were a result of her attack, winning set four 25-17.
Ashley Pyfferoen also marked 13 kills in the match for MSUM while Keri Dowzak and Marry Sussenguth each had four.
The Red and White will step on the court at 7 p.m. Friday evening as they will face the host school, Northwest Missouri State.
