Dragons Provisionally Qualify Three, Compete at Northwest Open

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men’s and women’s track and field teams opened up the 2010 indoor track season at the Northwest Open on the campus of the University of Minnesota on Saturday where the Dragons had three provisional qualifying times among many top three finishes.

Brock Keaton led the Dragons as the top provisional qualifier for the NCAA DII Indoor Championships as he won the 60 m dash in a time of 6.87 seconds. Uchenna Ogbonnaya and Derek Bredy finished in second and third, respectively, behind Keaton both registering times of 6.93.

The two other provisional qualifiers came in the field. Kayla Kapsner finished second in the high jump, leaping over the bar at 1.67 meters (5 feet, 5.75 inches).

Chris Heil also provisionally qualified in the weight throw as he finished fifth with a throw of 17.60 meters (58 feet, one inch). Anthony Enyi finished one place behind Heil with a throw of 17.46 meters (57 feet, three inches).

Enyi also had a topped the field in the the shot put with a throw of 14.17 meters (46 feet, six inches).

Anna VanWechel finished the 3000 meter run in her career-best time in second place in a time of 10:14.55. Danielle Thompson finished third in a time of 11:10.81 while Kaeley Troyer ran the 3000 meter in 12:08.39 in at fourth place.

Laquonne Robinson continued his dominance in the 60 meter hurdles, after breaking the school record at the pre-season meet in December, he finished prelims 1st in 8.28 seconds and ran 8.31 seconds to a first place finish at the finals. Robinson also finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 13.11 meters (43’0.25”).

Derek Bredy was also among top finishers in two events as he placed first in the long jump (7.22 meters, 23’ 8.25”) and second in the 60 meter dash. In the long jump, he topped NCAA DI jumper by 7.75 inches.

The Dragons men’s 4x400 relay team finished third in a time of 3:21.46. The squad of Bredy, Cory Schufelt, Oboganna and Lund finished behind two NCAA DI teams.

Other top three finishes include: Ryan Barnes, High Jump (3rd, 1.99m, 6’6.25”); Jessica Keesling, 60m hurdles (3rd, 9.39); Aaron Lund, 400m dash (2nd, 50.46); Cory Schufelt, 400m dash (3rd, 50.93); Kendra MooBery, 400m dash (3rd, 1:01.51); Jake Vossler, 600m dash (3rd, 1:24.75).
