Enyi Throws Automatic Qualifying Distance, Leads Dragons at Bison Classic

FARGO, N.D. - Anthony Enyi led the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons track and field teams at the Bison Classic on Sunday, as he placed first in the weigh throw with an automatic qualifying mark as he broke the MSUM school record and Bison Sports Arena record.
Enyi threw the weight 19.52 metes (64'0.5") to take the only top finish for the Dragons. It was also the only NCAA DI provisional qualifying mark by any athlete at the meet, division one or two. He is the first Dragon to automatically qualify for the NCAA DII Indoor National Championships this season. He also finished second in the shot put with a throw of 14.54 meters (47'8.5").
Each of the Dragons who finished second in their respective events, finished behind an NCAA DI competitor from South Dakota State or North Dakota State, the two DI schools at the meet.
Three Dragons took second place in dash competitions including Laquonne Robinson, Derek Bredy and Aaron Lund. Robinson finished two-hundreths of a second behind NDSU's Weston Leutz in the 60 meter hurldes, with a second place finish in 8.13 seconds. Bredy took a second in the 60 meter dash with a run of 6.93 seconds. Lund finishe with his best time of hte season in the 400 meter dash in 50.64.
In the men's distance events, the Dragons claimed a second place and two third place finishes. Michael McConnell took second in the mile with a 4:21.23 race behind NDSU's Travis Fitzke who finished in 4:19.23. He also finished third in the 800 meter run in a time of 1:59.93. Clayton Foster took third in the 1000 meter run in a time of 2:37.03.
The men's 4x400 meter relay took second behind NDSU's team, finishing just nine-one hundredths behind the DI squad in a time of 3:24.63. The Dragons squad included Cory Shufelt, Uchenna Ogbonnaya, Eric Asfeld and Lund.
In the women's track events, Anna VanWechel finished highest for the Dragons with a fourth place finish in the 1000 meter run in 2:59.73. She finished in front of two division one opponents and five conference competitors.
In the field, Enyi led the men's team, who also had one third place finish by Michael Bendix in the high jump. He flew over the bar at 1.94 meters (6'4.25").
Heather Schultz led the Dragons women in the field, with a fourth place finish in the shot put behind two division one athletes and Northern State's Amanda Madden. Schultz threw the shot put 11.96 meters (39'3").
MSUM will send split squads to the Jack Johnson Invitational (University of Minnesota) and the Cobber Invitiational (Concordia (Moorhead, Minn.)) on Jan. 23 when they return to competition.
