ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Minnesota State University Moorhead and Northern State University competed at the Walter Fuller Pool in St. Petersburg, Florida on New Years Eve. The meet was a pentathlon competition with all swimmers from both teams being ranked individually.

Each swimmer competed in five events: 50-yard Butterfly, 50-yard Backstroke 50-yard Breaststroke 50-yard Freestyle and the 100-yard Individual Medley.  The times from the five events are added together to decide the individual champion.

Ann Gusewelle was the individual pentathlon champion with a total time of 184.21 seconds.  NSU’s Christine Retzlaff finished second with 187.11.  Dragon swimmers Karena King, Cassie Jensen, and Olivia Martin rounded out the top five.  Gusewelle had the fastest times in the 50 Breaststroke (31.47), 100 IM (64.90), and 50 Freestyle (26.97).  Cassie Jensen had the fastest time in the 50 Butterfly (27.90) and Christine Retzlaff had the fastest time in the 50 Backstroke (31.61).

The Dragon Swimmers kick off each season with a pentathlon competition.  Cassie Jensen showed the greatest improvement from the October pentathlon achieving faster times in four of the five events and her total time.  Jensen also broke a team pentathlon record with her 27.90 50 Butterfly time.
