FAYETTE, Iowa – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons wrestling squad embarked on their last road test of the season and began the test with No. 6 ranked Upper Iowa Peacocks. The Dragons did all they could to gain an advantage but the Peacocks could not be budged and shut out the Dragons 41-0.
The Peacocks squad featured five NCAA DII ranked wrestlers and one of the toughest opponents for the Dragons during the season. At many points in the dual, the Dragons could not get the one elusive point to push themselves over the top and gain critical wins.
One of those was junior Tallen Wald. Wald took on Justin Decker at 157 pounds. Both wrestlers chose down with their period choice. Both wrestlers escaped their predicaments but Decker got the slight edge from riding time and won the match 2-1.
Junior Jon Swart also came close to a win in his match at 197 pounds with Nick Shandri. Swart escaped after choosing down to start the third period of his match and followed that up by escaping out of both Shandri takedowns in the period. But it was Shandri’s early escape in the second period after he chose down that gave him the point needed to gain a 5-4 victory.
The loss drops the Dragons record to 3-7 on the season (1-2 NSIC). The Dragons will head north to No 4 Minnesota State Mankato tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
