Dragons Swimming Takes Every Top-Finish Saturday

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Dragon-Cobber Invitational was a successful day for the Minnesota State University  Moorhead Dragons swimming and diving program as records were broke and the team qualified a diver for the NCAA DII National Championships.

Senior Ann Gusewelle broke the Nemzek Hall swimming pool records in the 50-yard, 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke records. Her time of 30.37 in preliminaries of the 50-yard was also a new school record. Gusewelle recorded times of 1:06.04 in the 100-yard and 2:26.59 in the 200-yard.

Senior Kayla Koenig qualified for the NCAA DII National Championships in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. She scored 414.65 points off the lower board, qualifying by over 20 points. On the higher board, she tallied 431.0 points to top the qualifying mark of 420.

The Dragons came into day two of the invitational looking to take the top finish in all 13 events, which is what they did.

The team opened up the finals of day two with two top relay finishes. In the 800-yard freestyle relay, Jess Tauber started the team as Jessica Doar swam second and was followed by Jessy Belden and Olivia Martin at the anchor. The team finished the race in 8:22.66.

The 400-yard medley relay saw the Dragons claim the top three finishes as the A, B and C squads finished in 4:09.04, 4:19.26 and 4:30.07, respectively.

The other top finishes included: Doar, 200-yard freestyle (2:03.35), 500-yard freestyle (5:31.15); Lisa Black, 50-yard backstroke (29.29), 100-yard freestyle (56.32); Gusewelle, 50-yard breaststoke (30.93), 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.15), 200-yard individual medley (2:15.21) ; Claire Caron, 100-yard butterfly (1:00.49), 100-yard backstroke (1:03.02); Tauber, 50-yard freestyle (25.86); Cassie Jensen, 50-yard butterfly (27.49).

MSUM will compete next at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Meet on Feb. 11-13 in Arvada, Colo.
