Ulmer Secures Championship At Dragon Open

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons wrestling team hosted the 2010 Dragon Open, which featured 14 teams from Minnesota, North and South Dakota and Canada. Junior Corey Ulmer, the top-seeded 125-pound wrestler in the tournament, took home the championship to lead the Dragons.

Ulmer notched two major decisions in a row to start his day, including a 10-0 win over Phillip Levine of NCAA Division-I North Dakota State and a 12-2 win over Kellan Zietz of Minot State. In the semi-finals, Ulmer defeated Brandon Goodwin of Sioux Falls by a 10-4 final to advance to the championship match against Augsburg's Joshua Roberts.

In the finals, Ulmer came back from a 2-1 deficit to tie the match at 2-2 as time experied. In the first sudden victory overtime period, Ulmer held Roberts and did not allow a point. Ulmer wasted no time in securing the win as his escape gave him the final point and the championship.

Brady Schneeberger also had a top three finish as he defeated Tanner Beaman of Mary (N.D.) by a 5-2 final. After being knocked into the third place bracket, Schneeberger won a 17-5 major decision over Devin Terry of Southwest Minnesota State to advance to the finals where he topped Beaman once again by a final of 7-1 to take third place.

Trent Sovde also placed third for the Dragons, defeating Augsburg's Josh Jacobson 11-5 and Augsburg's Jackson Mboma 5-3 to advance to the finals where he took third on a medical forfiet. Heavyweight Jon Swart also was a third place finisher, defeating Carter Ash from Southwest Minnesota State 2-0 and pinning unattached teammate Gerad Fugleberg to advance to the finals. There he defeated Austin Woo of Mary (N.D.) 3-1 by sudden victory to claim the third place championship.

The Dragons will begin their dual season on Wednesday when they take on NCAA D-III No. 1 Augsburg College at Nemzek Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
