MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons took on their cross town rival Concordia Cobbers at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse Wednesday night. The Dragons got out to an early lead and quickly put the match out of reach and secured a big win 22-18.
The Dragons faced their fourth nationally ranked team in a row, facing the No. 7 NCAA Division-III Cobbers. The match started at the heavyweight class and senior
Tim Johnson would set the tone for the Dragons. Johnson came out in a flurry, taking down the Cobber's Nick Nadeau just 19 seconds into the match.
After a Nadeau escape Johnon got his second takedown a minute later and crafted a three-point nearfall. Johnson gained an escape to start the second period and took down Nadeau right after and would pin Nadeau at the 3:09 mark to gain his 14 win.
Sophomore
Corey Ulmer would not let the momentum be stopped as he took on Ben Presler. After a Presler takedown in the first period, Ulmer would gain a takedown of his own in the second. Presler would take a neutral position to start the third and Ulmer took advantage, gaining another takedown with 23 seconds remaining. A stalling penalty on Presler would give Ulmer a 5-3 decision.
Junior
Brady Schneeberger would get one of the more impressive wins in the match when he took on No. 4 Ben Anderson. Anderson gained an early takedown but would not last as Schneeberger reversed Anderson and crafted a three-point nearfall with only a second remaining in the first period. A Schneeberger escape in the third gave the junior a good enough cushion to withstand an Anderson takedown and held on for a 6-5 decision.
The win stops a five-dual losing streak and gives the Dragons a 2-1 record at home. The win put the Dragons record at 4-9 on the season as they drop Concordia's record to 11-5 on the season. The Dragons remain at home as they take on Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs Friday at 7 p.m.
The Mustang dual is the Dragons Wrestling Endowment dual. All admission goes to the John Sterner Endowment Fund which benefits Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling scholarships.
