KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons softball team suffered two losses at the Rebel Spring games on Tuesday, as a tight game against Quincy (Ill.) did not go in their favor (8-6) and a tough Wisconsin-Parkside tallied early runs to take the win (4-1).
GAME ONE
After going down 2-0 in the top of the first inning, the Dragons were able to answer back and take the lead in the bottom of the fourth 3-2.
Betsy Dickson, who was pinch running, tallied the first run for the Red and White. She scored with two-outs on a single up the middle by
Desi DeMarco. Dickson had moved to scoring position after stealing second base. Ariel Adelson knocked DeMarco home, as she reached on an error. Adelson tallied the Dragons' third run of the inning as
AJ Hoefer doubled to left field.
The Lady Hawks would regain the lead, 4-3, in the top of the fourth inning as a sacrifice bunt set up two runner in scoring position that would eventually cross the plate on a single to centerfield and a deep infield single.
Quincy added two more runs in the fifth to go up 6-3.
MSUM cut the lead to two in the bottom of the sixth as
Casey Preston led-off with a single into left centerfield.
Simone Parcells, who pinch ran for Preston, stole second and would advance home on a double off the centerfield fence, hit by freshman
Amanda Moore.
The Lady Hawks put up two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on four consecutive singles, moving the score to 8-4.
Despite trailing by four, the Dragons put up a fight until the final out of the bottom of the seventh as they cut the lead to two before the game ended. DeMarco drew a walk and scored on a double by Ariel Adelson, who scored with two outs as the Dragons caught a break on an error by the Lady Hawks.
Alexa D'Onofrio suffered the loss for the Dragons as Megan Corey picked up the win for the Lady Hawks. Adelson, Hoefer and Moore each went 2-for-4 in the game. Adelson tallied two runs and an RBI, while Moore and Hoefer each picked up an RBI. Demarco had one hit and tallied two runs and an RBI.
GAME TWO
In game two, the Dragons went down 4-0 in the first two innings and could not muster enough momentum to mount a comeback as the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers nabbed the win, 4-1.
MSUM's sole run come in the fifth inning when
Jessica Hollis hit a one out double deep into right field.
Katie Howland followed that with a single. Hollis would score on a sacrifice fly by DeMarco. Hollis went 2-for-3 in the game with one run scored.
The Dragons will continue play at the Rebel Spring Games as they will face Caldwell (N.J.) and Adelphi (N.Y.) at 1 and 5 p.m., respectively, on Wednesday.
