Koch Named 2010 Starting Quarterback

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. – Interim Head Football Coach Joel Beard and the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons football program announced the selection of their 2010 starting quarterback, junior Kevin Koch.

Offensive Coordinator Damian Droessler told the quarterbacks in their meeting on Monday afternoon and the staff shared it with the team on Tuesday.

“With Kevin's intelligence, arm strength and game management ability he separated himself from the rest of the quarterbacks and emerged as the leader of this offense,” Droessler said.

Koch (Elmhurst, Ill.), a left-handed quarterback, transferred to MSUM this spring after playing two seasons at the College of DuPage, a community college in Glen Ellyn, Ill. While at COD, Koch received the Most Improved Freshman award in 2008 and was the 2009 Co-Offensive Player of the Year.

In the April 17 spring game, Koch completed 13 of the 17 snaps he was given, throwing for 119 yards.

“Kevin showed his ability out on the field in the last spring game,” Beard said. “He proved that he was prepared to take over the leadership role on our team.”

“I couldn't be more ecstatic about it,” Koch said. “To be on a team that wants to change the program and to be named as quarterback, is a great honor. I'm looking forward to summer workouts to keep improving to reach our goal to win everyday.”

The Dragons will wrap up their spring season on Sat., April 24 as they will have an inter-squad scrimmage from 12 -2 p.m. MSUM will open the 2010 season in Joplin, Mo., to face Missouri Southern at 6 p.m. on August 26.
