MOORHEAD, Minn. – In the toughest NCAA Division-II Wrestling conference in the nation, the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons saw a late season surge met with great success. All-American
Derek Bomstad was a key to that success and took home the team MVP Award.
Bomstad ended the regular season winning two of three heading into the postseason. In the regional tournament Bomstad finished second to advance himself to the national championships.
While Derek fell short of his ultimate goal, a national championship, he did achieve his second goal of becoming an All-American. For his late season heroics, Bomstad was awarded the Most Valuable Wrestler Award.
Evan Forde was a leader on and off the mat for the Dragons. Always getting the most out of his teammates, Forde led by example by his work ethic in all areas of preparation. As a team captain, Forde was the emotional leader of the Dragons squad.
Evan finished the season with an 18-10 record but his best success was seen in his teammates that he pushed to the limits. For his dedication and leadership, Forde was voted by his teammates for the Hardest Worker Award.
Tyler Kivel burst onto the scene for the Dragons, rattling off four straight wins, including three by major decision and one pin fall. The best is yet to come for this talented newcomer for the Dragons. His reliability as a wrestler and as a teammate earned Kivel Newcomer of the Year honors.
The Dragon Wrestling Faye Spiess Award was the final award for the wrestlers. The award was given to the wrestler who showed the very best characteristics of Dragon wrestling.
Brady Schneeberger faced many ups and downs during the 2009-10 campaign but finished strong.
Schneeberger caught fire in the regional tournament in February. Schneeberger won three straight, including a 17-1 technical fall and a pin fall over then top-ranked Jay Scherer to capture the regional championship.
Since the awards inception in 2000, some of the best wrestlers to come through MSU-Moorhead are on the plaque. For his stellar efforts,
Brady Schneeberger's name will be added to the list.
