MOORHEAD, Minn. – Minnesota State University Moorhead Athletics Director Doug Peters announced Tuesday the four finalists for the Head Men’s Basketball Coach, which includes Brian Dolan, Ty Orton, Jeff Kaminsky and Chad Walthall.

“We haven’t left any stone unturned in this search process and I am excited about the candidates that we have selected as finalists for our basketball coaching position,” Peters said.

Dolan, the current Head Coach at Upper Iowa, recently completed his fourth year at the helm of the Peacock’s program, where he has led the team to win the NCAA Life Skills Challenge in each of the four years as well as maintaining a 3.12 team GPA. Prior to taking the head coaching position at UIU, Dolan served as an assistant coach at the Univesrity of Texas-Pan America where he oversaw operation procedures in the basketball office as well as handled various on-court duties.

Dolan comes from a background of junior college and upper division NCAA teams, including UTPA, Southern Idaho, Southern Utah, Missouri State and Oral Roberts (Okla.). He will visit campus May 10.

Orton, the current Head Coach at Dickinson State (N.D.) has built up a wealth of knowledge at the junior college and NAIA level. He has served as the director of the men’s basketball program at DSU for the past three seasons, posting winning records in the last two years. He was recognized as the Dakota Athletic Conference’s Coach of the Year in 2010.

Prior to DSU, Orton served as the Head Coach at McCook Community College (McCook, Neb.) where he led the team to one conference championship and two runner-up nods. He was named the Conference Coach of the Year and the Region IX Coach of the Year in 2005 after McCook finished first in the league after posting second place finishes in the both of the two years prior.

He also played a crucial role as the Booster Club Coordinator at both Dickinson and McCook, raising over $170,000 for athletic scholarships per year. Orton will visit campus on May 7.

Kaminsky, the current Head Coach at Valley City State, has been a head coach for 23 seasons spanning primarily NCAA DIII and the NAIA. He recently finished his fifth season at VCSU, where he led the Vikings to their first 20+ win season in over twenty years in 2007-08.

Prior to Kaminsky’s arrival at VCSU, the program had never finished above fifth in the DAC and had not achieved a winning season since 1988-89. Under his direction, the team has not finished lower than fourth in the DAC and have won at least 20 games in two of the past three seasons.

Before taking over the helm at VCSU he served as the head coach at Wisconsin-Superior (1994-2005), Mid-State Technical College (Wisc.) (1987-1994) and as the graduate assistant at Kent State (Ohio) (1985-87). Kaminsky will visit campus on May 6.

Walthall served the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa, where he oversaw recruitment and had primary duties in planning practice. During his tenure at Iowa, he recruited two Big-Ten all-freshman team members as well as had three recruits named to the nation’s top 150-recruits list in 2010.

Prior to Iowa, Walthall served seven seasons as the head coach at Loras College, where he became the third winningest coach in school history, also serving as the athletics director from 2004-07. In 2006-07 Walthall led LC to their first conference championship since 1951, with the most conference wins in school history. He proceded to lead the team to an IIAC tournament championship (first in school history) and the team’s first berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Walthall, no stranger to Moorhead, is a graduate of Concordia (1991). He will visit campus on May 10.

“The four coaches bring a variety of skills and experiences to the table,” Peters said. “It will be fun determining the best fit for the Dragons.”
