Dragons Men in 2nd and Women in 8th After Day One of NSIC Championships

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons men's and women's track teams competed in the first day of the 2010 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Track and Field Championships that they are hosting at Alex Nemzek Stadium and Ron Masanz Track on MSUM's campus.

Eleven women's teams and ten men's teams competed in rainy and cold conditions in both final and preliminary events on Friday. Saturday's events will begin at 11 a.m.

The men's team is in second after the first day of competition with seven events that are final. The top results for the Dragons include two second place finishes in both the long jump and the hammer throw.

Derek Bredy was the Dragons top finisher in the long jump with a second place finish. His final distance was 7.05 meters (23' 1.75").

Chris Heil threw the second longest distance in the hammer throw as he earned the silver with a toss of 51.68 meters (169' 07"). Teammates Jose Alba and Anthony Enyi finished in fifth and sixth, respectively. Alba threw a distance of 49.25 meters (161' 07") while Enyi tossed 49.05 meters (160' 11").

Luke Buchholz placed fifth in the men's javelin throw with a toss of 47.4 meters (155' 6") to earn four points towards the Dragons team total. Ryan Barnes took fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.97 meters (6' 5.5").

Freshman Laquonne Robinson posted the top time in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.56 to advance to the finals in the event. He also holds the fourth fastest time in the 400 meter hurdles and will move on to Saturday's final with a time of 56.50.

Moving on to finals on Saturday are Michael McConnell, 1500 meter (8th, 4:05.10); Kyle Eckhoff, 1500 meter (9th, 4:05.49); Aaron Lund, 400 meter dash (1st, 49.75); Derek Bredy, 100 meter dash (5th, 10.68) and 200 meter dash (4th, 21.85); Brock Keaton, 100 meter dash (6th, 10.79) and 200 meter dash (8th, 22.31); Uchenna Ogbonnaya, 100 meter dash (7th, 10.89) and 200 meter dash (6th, 22.20); Clayton Foster, 800 meter (6th, 1:58.12); Eric Asfeld, 400 meter hurdles (3rd, 57.80).

The women's squad is in eighth after day one, with seven events final.

Friday's finals include a third place finish by Kirby Black. She jumped a distance of 5.48 meters (17' 11.75") and earned six points towards the women's team total. Kaylyn Ronke had a fifth place finish in the pole vault with a vault of 3.36 meters (11' 0.25"). Laura Kohtala finished seventh in the javelin throw with a toss of 32.98 meters (108' 2"). Kayla Kapsner finished sixth in the high jump as she jumped over the bar at a height of 1.58 meters (5' 2.25").

Anna VanWechel, the leader of the team, qualified for the finals round of the 1500 meter run as she came in with the fastest time in her preliminary heat with a time of 4:53.51. Her fastest time of the season was 4:31.06 and is the fastest time recorded among the league this season. She also holds the fifth fastest time in the 800 meter preliminaries with a time of 2:19.46.

Also moving on to Saturday's finals are: Jessica Keesling, 100 meter hurdles (4th, 15.17); Kendra Mooberry, 400 meter dash (6th, 57.92); Ashley Berg, 400 meter hurdles (3rd, 1:07.17).
