Dragon Men in First Place, Women Sixth, Friday's Results at the NSIC Track & Field Championships

ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead track and field teams are competeing at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships, the men ended day one in first place and the women sit tied for sixth.

The men lead with 55 points after day one, the next closest opponent is Northern State with 42.5 points. The women's team has 18 points.

Kara Nygaard started the scoring off for the Dragon women's team as she threw an NSIC best 129'7" in the javelin throw (39.49 meters).

Both Kayla Kapsner and Ashley Jonas scored points for the Dragon women in the high jump on Friday evening. Kapsner placed third with a jump of 1.63 meters (5'4.25"). Jonas finished sixth with a jump of 1.63 meters, going over the bar on her second attempt.

Anna VanWechel will move on to the finals in the 1500 meter run as she ran the fifth best time in the preliminaries on Friday. Her time was 4:48.21.

The Dragons had three qualifiers in the two hurdle events. Jessican Keesling qualified for the finals in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.93. Kendra Mooberry and Ashley Berg had the second and third best times in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles, respectively, with times of 1:06.31 and 1:06.39.

In the field the Dragons scored in both the long jump and the hammer throw on Friday. Chris Heil led the charge as he placed first in the hammer throw, tossing his best distance of the season. His throw was 61.58 meters (202') and was an NSIC record and an NCAA DII provisional mark. Teammate, Anthony Enyi placed third with a throw of 197'11" (60.33 meters).

The Dragons also scored in the long jump with Laquone Robinson finishing third and Bredy finishing sixth. Robinson's leap was 7.09 meters (23'3.25") while Bredy's was 6.98 meters (22'11").

Senior Erik Hanson placed seventh in the 10K, as he had a time of 32:38.12 and scored two points for the Dragons.

Four Dragons scored in the high jump as Ryan Barnes set the mark for the team with a second place finish. His final jump was 2.06 meters (6'9"). Ryan Olson, Laqyone Robinson and Michael Bendix also placed in sixth through eighth place, respectively all at heights of 1.96 meters (6'5"), going over the bar at different times.

The men's team had multiple team members advance from the preliminaries on Friday to compete in the finals on Saturday. They include: 100-meter dash, Derek Bredy and Brock Keaton; 200-meter dash, Bredy and Aaron Lund; 400-meter dash, Lund and Ryan Olson; 1500-meter run, Michael McConnell; 110-hurdles, Laquone Robinson.
