VanWechel Caps NCAA DII Outdoor Championships with All-American Honor

| By:

PUEBLO, Colo. – One Minnesota State University Moorhead student-athlete competed on the final day of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo., Saturday and did not disappoint.  Anna VanWechel ran the final race of her Dragon career and delivered the second All-American honor of the weekend for the team.

The chances for another All-American student-athlete for the Dragons came down to one when the sun rose on Saturday morning.  Anna VanWechel remained as the lone runner attempting to join Christopher Heil in receiving the national honor.  Heil finished fourth in the hammer toss on the first day of competition.  VanWechel also ran on the first day, finishing first in the 1500m run in preliminaries to earn her spot in the finals.

The only Dragon race on Saturday came and went with VanWechel finishing third in 4:38.23, less than two seconds behind first place Amanda Putt of Hillsdale College.  Putt was the only athlete in the nation to race the 1500m faster than VanWechel during the regular season.  Fellow Northern Sun runner Melissa Agnew of the University of Mary finished the finals race one second in front of VanWechel to claim second.

Saturday's events marked the finale of the Dragons' 16 sports for the 2011-12 season.  A big congratulation comes from the Dragons athletics department to all of the student-athletes and coaches who accomplished so much and represented the university well.
