MOORHEAD, Minn. -- It was a year of transition for the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team in 2013 with first-year Head Coach
Oliver Summers taking the reins of the Dragon program. MSUM also did not have a senior (athletic eligibility-wise) on the roster and often started as many as three freshman in its lineup.
The result was some growing pains throughout the year, which led to a 3-10 mark overall and 3-9 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Despite the record, Summers was pleased with the young team's attitude throughout the season.
"I couldn't be happier with the work ethic from the team this year," Summers said. "The team has a great dynamic and they've kept their heads up through losses and not looked back. I'm excited for the future here."
Freshman
Morgan Smith had a promising 2013 season, leading the Dragons with a 6-7 mark in singles, including 6-6 in conference play. Sophomore
Jenna Galstad and freshman
Ashley Wood followed with 3-10 marks.
In doubles,
Morgan Smith and freshman
Cassie Smith teamed up for a 5-6 mark, including a solid 5-5 in conference matches.
Cassie Smith finished 5-6 overall in doubles.
The Dragons earned wins over Minnesota-Duluth (6-3), Bemidji State (8-1) and Minnesota-Crookston (5-4) during the year. They lost a tough one-point match to Mary (5-4) as well in a match that could have went either way.
MSUM will lose two players who are graduating --
Jenna Galstad and
Jaime LaCoursiere, and also lose
Leandra Schmidt, but will return the rest of its roster. In addition, Summers signed Jessamy Jones from East Grand Forks last fall and plans on signing at least four more individuals for 2013-14.
