MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Pianist Jim Steinworth does it for the crowd. He and Cal Spooner will be performing, or competing rather, to cap off the Dragon Fire Walk for Athletics.
The River Rats dueling pianos will hold a 21 and older show in the Nemzek Fieldhouse beginning at 7:30 p.m. on April 27th.
The dueling piano show has two grand pianos and two pianists who illuminate the crowd through well-known songs chosen by the crowd.
“We aren't paid enough to think, so we make the people think. We have request cards we hand out and the people tell us what to play,” said Steinworth.
Steinworth said he loves that no show is ever the same. “It's seat of the pants entertainment,” he said.
Steinworth said the show is entirely about getting the crowd into it and having a good time.
With both pianists spending years in rock-n-roll bands, the two have been around music their entire lives. They eventually decided that the dueling piano gig was the job for them.
“Cal is an accomplished guitar player, but we found out that playing the keyboards was cooler, and dueling pianos never looked back,” Steinworth said.
The two play anything from rock-and-roll, to pop, to country music and admit to knowing way too many songs.
“It's a reason for people to bond, scream, and have a good time,” said Steinworth.
However, the crowd is not the only one that will have a good time. Spooner and Steinworth have been known to slam the piano lids, pound the tops, and even walk on the piano.
