MaKenzie Smith won the women's race to help the Dragon women take a solid second behind the University of Mary.
The MSUM men edged Mary by just two points (34-36) for the team title; it was the Dragons second team win of the season. The MSUM women finished with 62 points, trailing champion Mary with 29.
"We're training at a very high level right now. We're focused on championship racing at the end of the season," MSUM cross country coach
Ryan Milner said. "Coming into this race with tired legs, I was happy with how both teams performed."
MSUM went 3-4-5 on the men's side. Junior
Brady Speicher was third in 25:56, followed closely by redshirt freshman
Josh Young in fourth in 25:58. Freshman
Joshua Ernst was fifth in 26:00.00.
Senior
Tyler Hennen gave MSUM a fourth runner in the top 10 with a ninth-place finish. His 8K time was 26:33.
Junior
Cody Christ, making his season debut, was 17th in 27:07. Freshman
Spencer Bergen was 20th in 27:28 while sophomore
Luke Himmelspach was 37th in 28:39.
The Dragon women had to adjust to the absence of their top runner, senior
Molly Montonye, who is out with an injury. Smith picked up the first win of her collegiate career, running a 5K time of 18:15 to edge Mary's Kaycie Stewart by two seconds at the finish line.
Freshman
Marissa Carlson also had a strong performance, taking seventh in 18:47. Sophomore
Mindy Kraft also was solid, taking 13th in 19:19. Senior
Emily Mammenga was 18th in 19:42. Freshman
Samantha Swenson was 27th in 20:11, freshman
Alicia Swenson was 33rd in 20:17, senior
Elli Teige was 44th in 20:50 and freshman
Mackenzie Foltz was 50th in 21:18 to round out the Dragon finishers.
The MSUM teams are off until Oct. 24 when they compete at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships. The meet will be held at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Minneapolis, Minn. – the same course as the Roy Griak Invitational was held earlier this season.
