JAMESTOWN, N.D.—The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's cross country team place three runners in the top five on its way to the victory at the Jimmie Invitational hosted by the University of Jamestown on Friday. Junior MaKenzie Smith won the women's race to help the Dragon women take a solid second behind the University of Mary.

The MSUM men edged Mary by just two points (34-36) for the team title; it was the Dragons second team win of the season. The MSUM women finished with 62 points, trailing champion Mary with 29.

"We're training at a very high level right now. We're focused on championship racing at the end of the season," MSUM cross country coach Ryan Milner said. "Coming into this race with tired legs, I was happy with how both teams performed."

MSUM went 3-4-5 on the men's side. Junior Brady Speicher was third in 25:56, followed closely by redshirt freshman Josh Young in fourth in 25:58. Freshman Joshua Ernst was fifth in 26:00.00.

Senior Tyler Hennen gave MSUM a fourth runner in the top 10 with a ninth-place finish. His 8K time was 26:33.

Junior Cody Christ, making his season debut, was 17th in 27:07. Freshman Spencer Bergen was 20th in 27:28 while sophomore Luke Himmelspach was 37th in 28:39.

The Dragon women had to adjust to the absence of their top runner, senior Molly Montonye, who is out with an injury. Smith picked up the first win of her collegiate career, running a 5K time of 18:15 to edge Mary's Kaycie Stewart by two seconds at the finish line.

Freshman Marissa Carlson also had a strong performance, taking seventh in 18:47. Sophomore Mindy Kraft also was solid, taking 13th in 19:19. Senior Emily Mammenga was 18th in 19:42. Freshman Samantha Swenson was 27th in 20:11, freshman Alicia Swenson was 33rd in 20:17, senior Elli Teige was 44th in 20:50 and freshman Mackenzie Foltz was 50th in 21:18 to round out the Dragon finishers.

The MSUM teams are off until Oct. 24 when they compete at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships. The meet will be held at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Minneapolis, Minn. – the same course as the Roy Griak Invitational was held earlier this season.
