Molly Montonye won the Dragon Twilight 4K
race.MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's cross country team swept the top three places claimed the victory in the Fred Dahnke 6K at the Dragon Twilight meet, which was held on Friday at the Tri-City Soccer Complex in Moorhead, Minn. Senior
Molly Montonye defended her individual title and won the Randy Smith 4K to help the Dragon women finish second.
The MSUM men won with 22 points, 21 points better than runner-up Dickinson State to earn their third straight title at the event. Â The Dragon women (40 points) were runners-up to Minnesota-Duluth (24). The meet was the first of the season for MSUM's teams.
In the Fred Dahnke 6K, MSUM junior
Brady Speicher won the event with a time of 19:00.2. Redshirt freshman
Josh Young was second in 19:05.9 while sophomore
Jay Biwer was third in 19:12.7.
Senior
Tyler Hennen was seventh in 19:35 while junior
Brandon Selbig was ninth in 19:46.9. Freshman
Joshua Ernst was 10th in 19:48.7, giving the Dragons six runners in the top 10. Freshman
Spencer Bergen was 17th in 20:18.9.
In the Randy Smith 4K women's race, Montonye was locked in a dual with Minnesota-Duluth's Emilee Trost for much of the event. The battle came down to the final few meters where Montonye edged Trost by one second at the finish line. Montonye's winning 4K time was 13:48.1, which was 1.1 seconds faster than Trost.
Junior
MaKenzie Smith was fifth with a time of 14:11.3, while freshman
Marissa Carlson, making her Dragon debut, was sixth in 14:25.2. Senior
Emily Mammenga was 10th in 14:48.8. Sophomore
Mindy Kraft was 18th in 15:22.4 while freshman
Alicia Swenson was 26th in 15:46.3. Freshman
Samantha Swenson was 42nd in 16:24.0.
MSUM's next action is on Sept. 26 at the University of Minnesota's Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn.
