Molly Montonye recorded a top 10 finish to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's cross country team to a sixth-place finish in the maroon division at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. Redshirt freshman
Josh Young helped the MSUM men to an eighth-place finish.
MSUM finished in the sixth spot out of 37 teams on the women's side with 183 points. The Dragons were the third-highest finishing Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference team and finished ahead of ranked teams Augustana and Winona State.
The Dragon men finished in eighth out of 37 teams and were the second-highest NSIC finisher of the 12 teams that competed, trailing only Augustana. The Dragons finished with 261 points.
Montonye recorded her second straight top 10 finish at the Griak, finishing in seventh (fifth in the team competition) with a 6K time of 22:47. A year ago she placed fourth overall. Alexis Zeis of Mary won the women's competition at 22:13.6.
Junior
MaKenzie Smith also had a good showing for the women, taking 13th (11th in the team standings) with a time of 23:11. Freshman
Marissa Carlson was 31st (29th in team standings) at 24:05.9, while senior
Emily Mammenga was 55th (52nd in team standings) at 24:35. Sophomore
Mindy Kraft (25:16) finished 93rd (86th in team standings).
Freshmen
Alicia Swenson (26:29) and
Samantha Swenson (27:56) rounded out the MSUM finishers.
Redshirt freshman
Josh Young led the men, finishing 41st (36th in the team competition) with an 8K time of 27:21. Senior
Tyler Hennen was 53rd (48th in team) in 27:35 while freshman Josh Ernst was 61st (56th in team) in 27:39. Junior
Brady Speicher was 65th (60th in team) in 27:42 while sophomore
Jay Biwer was 66th (61st in team) in 27:43.
Junior
Brandon Selbig (29:10) and freshman
Spencer Bergen (29:12) rounded out the Dragon finishers. Junior
Cody Christ, one of the team's top runners a year ago, did not compete this weekend.
The MSUM teams are off until Oct. 9 when they compete at Jamestown.
