Day 1 ResultsMANKATO, Minn. — Sophomore
Brian Huber claimed the championship in the long jump to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's track and field team at the first day of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Championships on Friday at Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato, Minn.
The Dragon men are in fifth place after Friday's competition with 24.2 points. The Dragon women are in eighth at 11 points.
Huber picked up his second straight NSIC indoor title in the long jump, posting an effort of 24-5 to win the event by more than 13 inches. The Staples, Minn., native already has qualified for the indoor nationals in that event after jumping 24-11 earlier this season. That jump is tied for third-best in Division II this season.
Huber also scored points in the high jump for MSUM, taking fifth at 6-8. Freshman
Andrew Schonnesen, who finished fifth in the heptathlon at the NSIC Multi Events earlier this month, tied for sixth in that event at 6-6.
Senior
Andrew Werk was sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 55-3 1/2. Junior
Cody Christ was seventh in the 3,000-meter run in 8:40.72.
The Dragon women, who had three team points after sophomore
Caroline Jansen finished sixth in the heptathlon earlier this month, had four top eight finishes on Friday.
Junior
Katrina Mellegard was seventh in the weight throw in 54-2 3/4, which was an NCAA provisional qualifying effort. Junior
MaKenzie Smith was seventh in the 3,000-meter run in 10:16.18.
Sophomore
Bailey Reiner was seventh in the long jump at 18-0 1/4.
MSUM's women's Distance Medley Relay was seventh in 12:54.63. That consisted of freshman
Mackenzie Foltz, Reiner, freshman
Alicia Swenson and sophomore
Mindy Kraft.
PrelimsSeveral Dragons had good performances to advance to Saturday's finals.
For the Dragon men, junior
Brady Speicher was first in the 800-meter prelims in 1:56.11, .02 seconds faster than his seed time.
Three Dragon men advanced in the mile: Speicher (second, 4:26.70), senior
Tyler Hennen (4:22.92) and redshirt freshman
Josh Young (4:27.12),. Hennen's time was second-fastest in the prelims.
Young had the fastest-time in the 1,000-meter prelims in 2:34.89 to reach the finals in that event.
Senior
Kenny Andri qualified for the finals in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.80, fourth-fastest in the prelims.
For the Dragon women, junior
Alissa Mears was sixth in the 800 prelims in 2:18.13 to reach the finals in that event. Senior
Emily Mammenga advanced in the 1,000-meter run, taking fifth in the prelims in 3:01.16. Senior
Molly Montonye qualified for the finals in the miles, running a prelim time of 5:11.72. Freshman
Marissa Carlson also advanced in the mile in 5:16.75.
The final day of competition is set for Saturday. Field events will start at 10 a.m. with the track events starting at 1 p.m.
