Dragon Women Win 3 Events, Men Win 2 at Al Bortke Open

BISMARCK, N.D. – Three event wins helped the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's track and field team post a second-place finish at the Al Bortke Open held on Saturday in Bismarck, N.D. Senior Andrew Werk and junior Brady Speicher each claimed wins to help the Dragon men finish third.

The MSUM women finished with 144 points on the day, while the men, who did not have sophomore Brian Huber competing (he was at a meet in Texas), had 88.5.

Sophomore Bailey Reiner had a solid all-around day for MSUM. She won the long jump in 18-1 1/2, which is the sixth-best jump in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference this season. Reiner  was third in the 100-meter dash (12.68) and was part of the winning 4x100 relay team. The 4x1, which consisted of freshman Ki'Arah Johnson, sophomore Judith Robinson, junior Katie Holzheimer and Reiner, posted a winning time of 49.11.

Robinson won the 200-meter dash in 25.28 with Holzheimer third in 25.70. Freshman Marissa Carlson was second in the 800-meter run in 2:26.09 while senior Emily Mammenga was third in 2:31.02.

Sophomore Shayla Munson was second in the discus at 126-9. Junior Katrina Mellegard was second in the hammer at 145-11.

On the men's side, Werk won the hammer throw in 165-7, which is the sixth-best toss in the NSIC so far in 2016.

Speicher continued his stellar 2015-16 athletic year with a win in the 800-meter run. Speicher ran a winning time of 1:54.62, which is the fastest in the NSIC this season.

Freshman Logan Thiel was second in the pole vault at 12-11 1/2, while freshman Tomasz Napiorkowski was second in the discus at 144-8. Freshman Jonas Matzen was third in the high jump in 6-2 3/4.

Huber Competes in Texas
Sophomore Brian Huber competed at the Wes Kittley Invite hosted by Division I school Abilene Christian on Saturday in Abilene, Texas. He finished third in the Non-Division I long jump with an effort of 23-6 3/4.

Abilene Christian is coached by former Dragon head track and field coach Keith Barnier.

MSUM will send athletes to California for three competitions next week, starting Thursday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Norwalk, Calif. MSUM will also compete at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., and at the Long Beach State Invitational next week.
