SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A record-breaking performance helped Minnesota State University Moorhead junior
Cody Christ win the 10,000-meter run during the opening day of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Dragon men are in fifth place out of 12 teams with 24 points after the opening day while the Dragon women are in a four-way tie for fourth with 19 points.
Christ picked up the second NSIC title of his career with a dominant performance in the 10,000 meters. The junior posted a winning time of 30:24.05, which is also a Howard Wood Field facility record. That broke the previous record of 30:37 set by Dragon Dave Sederquist in 1981. Christ's time was an NCAA provisional qualifying time as well. A year ago, Christ won the NSIC outdoor title in the 5,000 and was runner-up in the 10,000.
Sophomore
Brian Huber picked up All-NSIC honors with a runner-up finish in the long jump. Huber posted a jump of 23-9 during Friday's competition. The new record setter was Keyshawn Davis of St. Cloud State, who won with a 24-9 1/2.
Senior
Andrew Werk also earned All-NSIC honors, placing third in the hammer throw at 178-7, which was a personal-best. Werk now has three All-NSIC honors in his track and field career.
For the Dragon women, sophomore
Bailey Reiner led the way, earning All-NSIC honors in the long jump. She recorded a jump of 18-8 to finish third. Sophomore
Caroline Jansen was fourth at 18-7.
Junior
Katie Holzheimer was sixth in the javelin in 114-3, while junior
MaKenzie Smith was sixth in the 10,000-meter run in 37:40.12 to give the Dragons three team points in that event.
Prelims
Freshman
Brett Lawrence and senior
Charles Tiedman both advanced to the finals in the 400-meter dash. Lawrence ran a time of 50.21 in the prelims while Tiedman ran a 50.56.
Senior
Emily Mammenga qualified for the finals in the 1,500 in 4:58.17. That was the ninth-best on the day.
Junior
Brady Speicher was the fastest qualifier in the 1,500 prelims in 4:07.94. Sophomore
Josh Young also advanced in 4:17.22 as did senior
Tyler Hennen in 4:14.17.
Speicher and Young also advanced in the 800. Speicher ran a time of 1:58.38 and Young ran a time of 1:58.87.
Huber qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash in 10.76, the third-fastest time of the day.
Junior
Alissa Mears was second in the 800 prelims in 2:19.59 to advance.
Field events begin the competition at 11 a.m. on Saturday with the men's discus, women's shot put and men's triple jump. Running events begin at 1 p.m. with the 4x100 relay.
