NSIC Release
MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team has been picked to win the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference according to the preseason coaches' poll released on Wednesday. The Dragons received 213 points overall, and 47 points in the North Division.
MSUM is the defending NSIC regular season champion and is a two-time champion of the NSIC North Division.
NSIC coaches rank each team from 1 to 15 with a first-place vote receiving 15 points, second place 14, third place 13, etc. Coaches do not rank their own team or vote for their own players.
Dragon senior
Drew Sannes was chosen as the North Division Preseason Player of the Year. Sannes was the 2016-17 NSIC Player of the Year and led the team in scoring and rebounding last season.
Senior guard
Cassidy Thorson (14.1 ppg) and junior guard
Jacky Volkert (12.7 ppg) return as starters for the Dragons. Also returning is sophomore post
Megan Hintz, who averaged 7.6 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
MSUM returns nine letterwinners overall from last year's 24-5 squad that advanced to the NCAA tournament.
The Dragons will open the 2017-18 exhibition season on the road on Thursday against Division I foe South Dakota State University. Game time is 7 p.m. in Brookings, S.D.
