MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team fell to No. 1 Southwest Minnesota State University 25-22, 25-9, 25-18.
The Dragons are now 7-9 over all and 2-6 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, while SMSU is 16-0, 8-0 NSIC.
Sophomore hitter
Kaylyn Jenkins led MSUM in kills with seven, while freshmen
Lauren Kiewiet and
Kylie Kanwischer had four and five kills, respectively. Setter
Ellie Hoyt and Kiewiet tied with 12 set assists. Libero
Monica Vega had 16 digs, while
Sarah Petrbok and
Courtney Selbitschka each had seven. Vega also had three service aces and Petrbok had one. Jenkins and senior
Tyann Caspers each had two blocks while Kanwischer had one.
The Dragons saw a 13-11 lead into the first set, but three Mustang kills and an attack error by Caspers gave SMSU the lead which they carried to a 25-22 set win. In the second set, the Mustangs got off to an early 4-0 lead that motivated them to a 25-9 set win.
MSUM was down 6-1 at the beginning of the third set, but kills by Jenkins and Kiewiet and two Mustang attacking errors made the score 6-5. The Dragons were able to tie SMSU, 10-10, but the Mustangs answered back with five consecutive points which helped lead the Dragons to a 25-18 third set victory.
The Dragons will take on University of Sioux Falls at home tomorrow at 5 p.m.
