Minn. – Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball junior Drew
Sannes has been named the 2016-17 MSUM Female Athlete of the Year. Sannes received the award at the Red and White Student-Athletes Award Ceremony on Sunday at the Comstock Memorial Union Ballroom on the
MSUM campus.
Sannes had an outstanding season in helping the Dragon women to their first NCAA tournament berth since 2008-09. She was the 2016-17 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Year, leading the Dragons to their first conference title since 2004-05.
The Hawley, Minn., native led the Dragons in scoring (15.3 points per game) and rebounding (8.3) while also leading the team in blocks (70) and free-throw percentage (86.8). She finished with a team-best 12 double-doubles and scored in double figures in 23 of the Dragons' 29 games.
Sannes is second all-time in blocks at
MSUM and is at 883 career points heading into her senior year in 2017-18.
Several individuals and awards were celebrated at the ceremony. First-Team All-NSIC members, All-American, NCAA statistical champions and several categories of academic awards received recognition. Dragon Awards, The Raise the Bar Award, the Helping Hand Community Award and Come Back award were among the awards given out on Sunday.
