MOORHEAD, Minn. — For the third straight year, the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's cross country team has won the Dragon Twilight meet. The Dragons claimed the title of the Fred Dahnke 6K by two points over Mary in action Friday night while the women finished third in the Randy Smith 4K.

MSUM Hall of Famer Fred Dahnke right.
The meet was the season opener for both Dragon teams.
Led by a runner-up finish from sophomore
Nadir Yusuf, the Dragon men finished with 47 points while Mary was at 49. Yusuf ran a time of 18:43.3 to finish 17 seconds behind winner
Cody Christ, who was running for the Dragon Alumni.
Redshirt freshman
Nick Marshall was fifth in the men's race at 18:55.5, while junior
Josh Young was eighth at 19:00.6 to give the Dragons three runners in the top 10. Freshman
Hunter Kjelshus was 12th in 19:11.5, while freshman
Alec Sanbeck was 21st in 19:40.7. Freshman
Aaron Johnson was 26th (19:05.8), sophomore
Devin Deringer 29th (19:58.4) and freshman
Jacob Dickerson 32nd (19:59.9).
"The men's race was pretty tight," MSUM head cross country/track and field coach
Ryan Milner said. "It was nice to see some of the young guys step up in their first time racing in a college setting. We had a couple of sophomores run well; Nadir ran a phenomenal race and so did
Nick Marshall."
The Dragon women finished with 111 points; Mary won with 19 while Minnesota Duluth was second at 47.
Junior
Marissa Carlson led the Dragon women, finishing ninth in 14:19.8. Sophomore
Kathryn Sistrunk was 10th in 14:25.9. Junior
Alicia Swenson was 26th in 15:24.7 while freshman
Emily Hultin was 47th in 16:15.7. Freshman
Megan Kucera was 54th in 16:31.1. Sophomore
Whitney Welder was 70th in 17:20.6.
"We're young on the women's side," Milner said. "We're in a transition time. We lost leaders like Molly (Montonye) and Makenzie Smith. It was nice to see Marissa and Kathryn start to step into that role."
MSUM is back in action on Sept. 23 at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis.
Note: Fargo Davies won the girls high school race. Dragon alum Terry Harrington of Fergus Falls presented the trophy to Davies head coach Jason Edwards, who ran for Harrington at Fergus Falls. Moorhead edged Perham for the boys title.
