MOORHEAD, Minn. — A 15-year fixture of the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team has moved onto her next opportunity.
Kelsey Fehl, who has served as the program's head coach since 2011, has resigned her head coaching position to pursue a career as a school counselor.
Fehl started as a freshman on the softball team in 2003 and has played numerous roles within the softball program — she was an assistant coach from 2008-10 and the head coach from 2011-18. She also served as events manager for Dragon home sporting events.
"Kelsey has been a dedicated member of the Dragon softball program as a player and coach for the past 15 years," Peters said. "As a head coach she met the challenges facing the softball program head on. Her focus on providing the best student athlete experience possible created lifelong friendships between the players and moved our program forward. We are cheering Kelsey on in her new venture."
A native of Willmar, Minn., Fehl was named the MSUM interim head coach in 2011 before being named to the permanent position in 2012. She took over the program as interim coach under challenging circumstances shortly prior to the 2011 season. She was promoted to permanent head coach in 2012.
"I am truly grateful for all of the opportunities that I had at MSUM," Fehl said. "From my four years as a student-athlete to all of my years coaching, I have been able to create lasting memories that I will always cherish. I have loved being a part of Dragon Athletics and even though I won't be coaching anymore, I am looking forward to seeing all the great things these athletes and this department will accomplish!"
Fehl was a four-year starter for the Dragon softball team from 2004-07. An honorable mention All-NSIC selection as a senior, Fehl closed a prosperous collegiate career with a .333 batting average in 53 games in 2007. She ranked third on the club in RBI (23) and fourth in base hits (49).
She completed two degrees at MSUM with a bachelor's degree in university studies and a master's degree in educational leadership.
