2009 Mascot Challenge

2009 Mascot Challenge

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons along with the North Dakota State University Bison and Concordia College Cobbers are excited to announce their partnership to compete in the 2nd annual Mascot Challenge benefiting The Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle Campaign.

The 2009 Mascot Challenge will take place in the entrance to the West Acres Mall in Fargo, N.D. on Dec. 12. The challenge will begin at 12:30 p.m. through 8 p.m. and will feature athletes, coaches and staff as bell ringers. Each school’s mascot will be present at the Challenge from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. The teams will be selling Mascot Challenge t-shirts at their respective institutions for $5, during the week leading up to the event (there is a limit of 100 per institution).

The Mascot Challenge honors the relationship between the three institutions and The Salvation Army. Each institution’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is working with The Salvation Army Staff to make the Challenge a success.

“Without the students this community would never have had enough manpower to place the millions of sandbags necessary to save our cities this past spring” said Captain Bill Mealy of The Salvation Army.

Nearly $1,000 was raised during the 2008 Mascot Challenge that ran for three hours at the West Acres Mall last year. MSUM took home the prized Kettle Trophy, by raising $403.

“I’m really looking forward to the Mascot Challenge. The student athletes are putting a lot of work into lining up volunteers from the various sports teams and encouraging the alumni to come to the kettles and ‘vote’ for their favorite mascot by making a donation.  I believe we are going to see this event move to a whole new level this year. To have the athletic departments come together like this to raise funds for The Salvation Army to help us serve those who come to us in need is amazing,” said Mealy.
