Trevor Barry

Two-time Olympian Trevor Barry is in his seventh season as an assistant coach on the MSUM track and field coaching staff in 2025-26. Barry coaches the sprint and jumping athletes at MSUM. He is also the department's Diversity & Inclusion Designee.

The 2024-25 season saw Barry help the Dragons earn three All-America nods. Shavantae Roberts was a First Team All-American in the 60m dash during the indoor season before earning Second Team honors in the outdoor 100m dash. Roberts reset her owns school records in both events again as well. High jumpers Jasiah Hambira (First Team) and Jaiden Peraza (Second Team) each earned outdoor honors as well. Peraza also qualified for the indoor national championships in high jump. Barry was also instrumental in the immediate success of his daughter Jazmin, who reset the MSUM school records in both the indoor and outdoor long jumps. Barry was the NSIC's champion in the outdoor long jump as well. 

Barry's athletes turned in more solid marks in 2023-24. Longtime protege Shyrone Kemp capped his incredible collegiate career during the indoor season with three All-NSIC performances. Kemp was the NSIC's champion in the high jump and triple jump while also being the conference meet's high-point scorer. The senior was named NSIC Field Athlete of the Year thanks to his performances. Kemp wrapped his career with two First Team All-America nods in the long jump and triple jump. Barry also helped guide sprinter Ibrahim Oduong to an NSIC title in the indoor 400m. Oduong was also a First Team All-America performer in the event at the NCAA Championships. 

Throughout the outdoor season, Barry continued his string of success as Oduong was once again an All-American. The senior would be the NSIC's runner-up in the 400m and would go on to earn Second Team All-America distinction. Sophomore Shavantae Roberts also saw incredible growth alongside Barry as she would reset MSUM school records in the 100m and 200m. Roberts set the 100m record on several different occasions during the year and made her first trip to the NCAA Championships. 

During the 2022-23 season, Barry helped earn Dragon sprinter Robynn Rolle-Curry earn two All-America honors in the 400m. Shyrone Kemp was also an indoor All-American in the triple jump as well. In total, Kemp earned three All-NSIC honors in the outdoor season in the high, triple and long jumps.

Barry has been instrumental in the development of the Dragon jumpers. Shyrone Kemp was national runner-up indoors in 2022 in the triple jump, where he set a school record. Kemp has four All-American honors in his career. Chris Cook and Travis Joseph have also earned All-American honors in the high jump. Barry was named the NSIC's Assistant Coach of the Year for his efforts in 2022. 

He coached Brian Huber to the Division II national championship in 2018 and also worked with Chris Cook as he earned two All-American honors in the high jump in 2019.

Representing the Bahamas, Barry was a high jump finalist at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janerio, Brazil; he finished 11th. He also qualified for the 2012 Summer Games in London. He was a World High Jump finalist in 2015 and was a bronze medalist at the 2011 World Outdoor Championships.

His personal records are 7-7 1/4 in the high jump and 25-10 in the long jump.

Dragon Hall of Famer Dave Bergstrom has been Barry's high jump coach since 2011. Bergstrom is a long-time assistant on the Dragon staff and will continue to coach the high jumps.

Barry previously served an assistant coach at North Dakota State. At NDSU during Barry's time as an assistant the Bison won nine Summit League women's team titles and seven men's team titles.  He coached two NCAA All-Americans, seven national qualifiers and 10 school record holders.

At Dickinson State, he was an eight-time NAIA national champion. He graduated from there with degrees in biology and Spanish.
