Former Dragon softball standout Kelsey Fehl is in her seventh year as the Minnesota State University Moorhead head softball coach in 2017. Fehl served as interim softball coach in 2011 before being named to the head coaching position on a permanent basis in the summer of 2011.
The 2016 season saw MSUM beat two regional qualifiers, Winona State and Minnesota Duluth, and remain in contention for a berth in the conference tournament until the final weekend of the 2017 campaign.
MSUM improved its win total for a second straight year in 2015. The Dragons went 7-3 on their Florida trip, their best record since 2006, and beat Minnesota Duluth for the first time since 2007.
The 2014 season saw MSUM make significant progress, recording a 15-24 record and more than doubling the Dragons' win total from the previous year. Highlights included the team's first win over Concordia-St. Paul since 2007, wins over Upper Iowa, Concordia, Northern State and Mary (after being swept by all four teams in 2013), plus a solid 4-3 mark on its annual trip to Florida.
The teams improved in several statistical categories, including batting average, team ERA, pitching strikeouts and RBI -- despite in playing in four less games that the previous season.
MSUM also placed seven players on the NSIC All-Academic Team. Ten members of the 2013-14 Dragon softball team were named All-America Scholar Athletes, with MSUM ranking 26th in all of Division II in GPA of 3.422.
Fehl, a native of Willmar, Minn., led a young team that started as many as seven freshmen to a 9-34 mark in 2011. Outfielder Paige Smith was named to the All-NSIC second team, while two Dragons earned Academic All-NSIC honors. MSUM had a solid year at the plate, hitting .263 with 17 homers.
In 2011, Fehl took over interim coach and led the Dragons to a 14-24 mark. Prior to that, she served as an assistant coach at MSUM.
Fehl was a four-year starter for the Dragons. An honorable mention All-NSIC selection as a senior, Fehl closed a prosperous collegiate career with a .333 batting average in 53 games in 2007. She ranked third on the club in RBI, 23, and fourth in base hits, 49.
A three-year letterwinner in softball and soccer at Willmar High School, Fehl earned two basketball letters as well. She was named to the Minnesota All-State and all-section softball teams for the Cardinals as a senior, and was also a member of the National Honor Society.
Fehl completed two degrees at MSUM with a bachelor's degree in university studies and a master's degree in educational leadership.
