Aberdeen, S.D. - The Minnesota State University Dragons swimming and diving team got the unique opportunity on Friday evening to compete in races they don't usually participate in, and it paid off as they topped the Northern State Wolves 184-106 at the dual between Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schools.
The Dragons, in their second week of competition, had many highlights including seven individual first place finishes and all of the MSUM relay team's touching the finish line first.
The team's best relay race came in the 200 yard medley relay when both the MSUM squads finished in the top slot. The teams tied with time so 1:53.76.
Senior
Cassie Jensen swam the breaststroke for the first time since here prep career, marking a lifetime best in the 200 yard with a time of 2:40.24. She finished the race in third behind teammates, juniors
Tiara Nelson and
Karena King who finished in 2:36.87 and 2:39.60, respectively.
The team's top swimmer, Ann Guswelle, who usually swims the breaststroke, had two second place finishes in the 100 yard butterfly and the 200 yard individual medley. She finished the fly in 1:02.88 and was followed to the finish by sophomore Claire Caron and freshman
Victoria Honetschlager. Caron had a time of 1:03.58 and Honetschalger hit a career best time of 1:04.15.
Guswelle had a time of 2:19.93 in the 200 IM, behind Northern's top swimmer Christine Retzlaff who placed first in both the raced against Guswelle.
MSUM will return to the pool on Oct. 31 at the Northfield Relays, hosted by Carlton College in Northfield, Minn. The races will begin at 11 a.m.
