Vikings Edge Dragons in Five Sets

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Augustana Vikings came back from a 2-1 deficit to take a five set match from the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons on Friday night, in a match that honored the MSUM seniors.

Seniors Keri Dowzak and Mary Sussenguth were honored before the match for their service and leadership to the Dragons volleyball program. They both played all four years at MSUM. Sussenguth will exit as the career block assists leader at MSUM.

The Vikings jumped out and took the first set, 25-18. The Dragons came back in the second set and took the extra-point game 27-25. The momentum carried into the third set as MSUM took a 2-1 lead. AC came back in the fourth after trailing by six to take the set 25-23.

In the fifth set, the Vikings took a quick 4-0 lead before Dragons' Head Coach Tammy Blake-Kath took a timeout. The Dragons rallied but could not come back to tie or take the lead as the Vikings out hit the home team by over .300 in the final set to take the match.

AC's Ellen Andrews led the field with 17 kills in the match. MSUM's Heidi Lensing had 15 kills while Laura Tvrdik trailed with 13. Both teams ran a 6-2 rotation with the setters splitting the assists, the Dragons' Leigh Splittstoesser had 30 and Anna Olson had 19. The Vikings Dani Haley had 31 assists while Breanna Brandt had 23.

The Dragons will host Wayne State (Neb.) on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the team's final regular season match.
