DULUTH, Minn. - Alison Nash Gerlach and
Meghan Rettke led the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons to a 72-64 win over the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs on Saturday night, as they both registered double-doubles to move the Dragons record to 7-0.
The Dragons open up the NSIC season with two wins on the road, staying on top of the league.
Gerlach led the field with 18 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds, while Rettke had 11 points and led the game with 13 boards.
MSUM led for most of the first half as they started out the game with an 8-0 lead. The Bulldogs tied the game at 19 with 4:25 left in the first half before they took the lead on a pair of free-throws by Lindsay Miller. They went up by five as Miller hit a three-pointer off a Dragon turnover.
The Bulldogs went up by as much as seven before the Dragons came back to tie the game at 30 with four seconds left in the half, which is where the score remained as the buzzer sounded for intermission.
In the second half, the Dragons came out ahd grabbed the momentum, taking a five point lead and never relinquished the shift as they held on to take the win.
Nash-Gerlach scored five points in the first three minutes of the second half, which was half of her points in the second half. She also went 11-for-12 from the charity stripe, as the team went 32-of-38 from the line, taking the most attempts as a team this season.
Brittany Mayclin had 13 points in the game, hitting two of her three attempts from behind the arc.
Angie Jetvig and
Krista Opheim also had 10 points each, as Jetvig pulled in three boards and Opheim had four assists.
The Dragons will host St. Cloud State on Friday in their NSIC home opener at 6 p.m. at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
