Golden Bears Too Much For Dragons

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team suffered a quick 3-0 loss to the reigning NCAA DII National Champions, Concordia Universtiy, St. Paul Golden Bears (25-10, 25-10, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Bears held on to their undefeated record of 17-0 and move to 6-0 in league play. The Dragons suffered their second loss in conference action, moving their NSIC record to 3-2 with a 13-5 overall record.

CU started with five consecutive kills to show that their No.1 ranking was earned and kept the momentum throughout the first two sets.

The Dragons made a comeback in the third set as Head Coach Tammy Blake-Kath switched up the lineup. MSUM started the set down 0-7 and improved the score to 7-13 before tying the game at 18. The Golden Bears took the next three points before Blake-Kath called her final timeout of the set, but the break in action was not enough to stop the national champions as they went on to take the match with a third set score of 25-22.

The Golden Bears were led by Sadie Kessle who had 13 kills in the match. She also had eight digs. Trailing her was Emily Palkert and Megan Carlson who each had 11 kills. The Golden Bears' libero, Mary Slinger had 18 digs in the match and the setter, Maggie McNamara had 45 assists.

The Dragons were led by Mary Sussenguth who had six kills in the match. She was assisted on most of her kills by Leigh Splittstoesser who had 11 assists in the match. Anna Olson also got in a few touches as the team's setter, Anna Olson tallied seven assists. The team had six blocks to Concordia's two, with Heidi Lensing, Sussentguth and Kristen Kleven each with three assisted blocks.

MSUM will step on the Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse court again on Fri., Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. against Southwest Minnesota State in NSIC action.
