Dragons Basketball Hosts Winona State and Upper Iowa, Jan. 22 & 23

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead basketball teams will host the Winona State Warriors and Upper Iowa Peacocks on Jan. 22 and 23, respectively. The games will be held in the Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse and will be played at 6 and 8 p.m. each day.

WOMEN

MSUM
The Dragons go into the game with an 12-6 overall record and 6-3 in league play. Most recently, the team topped Minnesota-Crookston 81-76 in a game where Alison Nash-Gerlach scored a career-high 32 points, 16 of which came from the free-throw line setting a new school record for free-throws made in a game.

Nash-Gerlach leads the team in scoring as she averages 15.4 points per game. She also averages 8.2 rebounds each game, second on the team behind Meghan Rettke, who averages 9.7 per game. Rettke also posts double figures in scoring with 13.7 points per game. Sophomore Angie Jetvig is averaging 11.9 points per game.

WINONA STATE WARRIOS
After beginning their season with an exhibition win against the University of Minnesota Gophers, the Winon State Warriors have put together an 11-6 overall record and have gone 6-4 in league play.

They began conference action with a 1-2 mark, before winning five of their last seven games. Most recently they split their weekend with a narrow win over Wayne State (71-67) and came up short against Augustana (84-71).

Ana Wurtz leads the team, as she his averaging 14.1 points per game. Michelle McDonald and Natalie Gigler are also averaging double figures in scoring with 10.8 and 10.2 points per game, respectively. McDonald leads the team on the boards averaging 7.3 per game.

UPPER IOWA PEACOCKS
The Peacocks are having a less than impressive season as they have managed only one win against Lewis University on Dec. 28. They have fallen short in all conference competitions as they sit on the bottom of the league with an 0-10 mark.

Kenya Howard leads the team as she is averaging 17.5 points per game, 19.2 in conference games and also pulls down 9.3 rebounds per contest. Three other Peacocks are averaging double figures, including Heidi McKean (12.0), Cassandra Deiters (11.2) and Lana Otting (10.3).


MEN
MSUM
The Dragons week was highlighted by Andrew VanHavermaet being named the NSIC Player of the Week after scoring 30 points in MSUM's comeback win over Minnesota-Crooktson last Saturday. He went 8-for-12 from the three-point line, one three shy of the school record.

Jake Driscoll leads the team with a 15.1 points per game average. VanHavermaet averages 11.2 points per game. Alex Novak is approaching the MSUM record for blocks in a season, as he has tallied 41 on the year. He also averages, leading hte team, with 7.1 rebounds per game.

WINONA STATE WARRIORS
Winona State men's team started out the conference season with an upset victory over the top ranked league team, St. Cloud State. The Warriors have played tight games in the rest of the conference to move their league mark to 6-4, where they lost all of their conference games by five or less points.

David Johnson leads the squad as he averages 21.9 points per game also grabbing over four rebounds per contest. Jon Walburg is the only other Warrior to post double figures in scoring each contest with 10.5, but many are on the brink of double-digits. C.J. Erickson leads the team in rebounding with 5.7 per game, he also averages 8.7 points per game.

UPPER IOWA PEACOCKS
The Peacocks started out the conference season winning three of their first four league games. Since, they have won only one conferernce game, coming last weekend as they topped Augustana by three (70-67). They also lost a close game to Wayne State last Saturday (57-53).

Matt Lesan leads the team as he averages 12.3 points per game, he also leads the team in steals with 23 on the year. Keith Steffeck averages 10.3 points agame and is second on the team in rebounding with 3.5 per contest.
