MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon volleyball team's five-match winning streak was ended on Saturday at he team's homecoming match as the No.4 ranked Wayne State Wildcats squeezed out a win, 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 20-25, 22-25).
The Dragons move to 11-9 overall while they are 7-5 in the league, the Wildcats remain at two losses on the season while they improve to 18 wins overall and eight in the NSIC.
Each set was tight but it was a kill by
Laura Tvrdik in set one that tied the score at 22 which led to the Dragons victory while
Katy Ness served to the first set win.
Heidi Lensing had a set high seven kills in the first set to lead the team to a win.
In set two the Dragons had two more kills than the Wildcats but hit a negative percentage which led to their loss. They had twelve kills int he set with six block assists, while the Wildcats had eight block assists that forced the negative percentage.
The Wildcats increased their momentum int he third set as they had a match-set high 16 kills, all of which were assisted. They also dug up 31 attacks by the Dragons to pick up the third set win.
WSC took an early lead in the fourth set but he Dragons climbed back to within two at the 20-18 mark where
Kayla Handevidt carefullly placed a service ace that forced the Wildcat's Coach to call a timeout. The momentum break was just enough as the team went on to take the match.
Lensing ended the match with 16 kills and also had 14 digs.
Leigh Splittstoesser had 49 assists and 25 digs on the day.
Katy Ness led the defense with 25 digs. Tvrdik had 12 kills with six block assists.
The Dragons will go back on the road to begin a threegame road trip starting Oct. 22 as they will travel to Minnesota Crookston. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
