Vanyo's penalty kick gave the Dragons a 2-1 lead in the first half.
BISMARCK, N.D. - The Dragons soccer team looked to reverse their fortune and get a big win over the Marauders of Mary (N.D.). The offense broke out for its first two-goal game of the season but it was the goalkeeper
Alison Wanner whose impact allowed the Dragons to stay in the game and come out with a 2-2 tie with the Marauders.
The Marauders were on the attack early, attempting the first five kicks of the game. The Dragons were up to the task, blocking three of the shots and forcing the others wide. The Dragons then took things into their own hands and tried to turn the tables but the Marauders were the ones who struck first on a goal by Dayna Domingo at the 18:51 mark of the first half.
After three blocked Marauder shots the Dragons answered right back as
Amanda Wurdeman's shot rebounded out front and was finished off by
Aimee Laurencelle who tallied her second goal of the season at the 31:23 mark of the first half.
The Dragons capitalized on a frustrated Marauder squad as a penalty gave
Tricia Vanyo received a penalty kick opportunity just a minute and a half later and took full advantage, netting her first goal of the season at the 32:53 mark. Just 37 seconds later, the Marauders' Markelle Gallagher was handed a yellow card. A chippy first half ended with both teams getting fouls as the first half came to an end with the Dragons on top 2-1.
The Marauders came out swinging in the second half as they forced the first four shots. A foul by the Dragons at the 54:11 mark prompted a penalty kick which was taken by Jessica Curl. Curl took advantage of the same opportunity the Dragons got in the first half and put the shot past senior
Alison Wanner for a 2-2 tie.
The pressure did not yield as the Marauders put two more shots that required Wanner's attention. Just 12 minutes into the second half, the Dragons got their first shot of the half from
Jordyn Wallenborn but was turned away by Marauders goalkeeper Chelsea Eades.
Both teams traded shots but the goalkeepers turned everything away as the furious pace resulted in nothing for either side for the rest of the half as the game went into extras with a 2-2 tie between the Marauders and Dragons.
The Dragons came out in the first overtime ready to take the game as
Shiree Lindholm and
Laura Kohtala both fired shots at Kassie Young but were turned away and through the first 100 minutes, nobody claimed the win. As the final overtime period came and played out, neither team could claim the win as both teams played to a 2-2 tie. Wanner finished the game with 16 total saves.
The Dragons end the losing streak with a tie and move to 0-9-1 on the season (0-5-1 NSIC) while the Marauders go to 3-4-5 (2-1-4 NSIC). The Dragons will face the Golden Eagles of Minnesota-Crookston on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Crookston.
