MOORHEAD, Minn. - A check for $1,000 was presented to the Fairfield Inn by Marriott by the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragon volleyball team on Saturday at the team's annual 'Dig for the Cure' match where they raised money through donations and t-shirt sales to provide hotel stays for cancer patients and their families during treatment periods. The Dragons also topped the Northern State Wolves in three sets.
The Dragons defeated the Wolves in one hour and 10 minutes in a three-set match, where
Heidi Lensing (Belgrade, Minn.) led the team with 10 kills and 11 digs. The scores of the sets were 25-23, 25-22, 25-17.
In set one, it took the Dragons the last two points of the set to take the lead and the win as back-to-back kills from
Kayla Handevidt (Esko, Minn.) and Lensing gave MSUM the 25-23 win. The teams were tied five times in the first set with the Wolves taking the lead after each tie in all but one case, the difference being at the 23-23 mark where the Dragons took the win.
Despite being a close score, the Dragons took the lead at the 3-2 mark in the second set and held it through the end. The team capitalized on 11 NSU attacking errors and five total blocks to hold the visitors to a negative attack percentage.
After the short intermission, the Dragons meant business and took the win handily as they had 15 kills to the Wolves seven.
On the day,
Leigh Splittstoesser (Stewartville, Minn.) had 34 assists and led the team with 18 digs. Handevidt,
Ashley Pyfferoen (Byron, Minn.) and
Laura Tvrdik (Farwell, Minn.) each pitched in with eight kills. Pyffereon and
Katy Ness (Ada, Minn.) had 13 digs a piece.
MSU Moorhead moved their record to 9-8 overall and 5-4 in the league with the Wolves going to 1-8 in the NSIC with a 9-9 overall tally.
The Dragons will host Augustana (S.D.) and Wayne State (Neb.) on Oct. 15-16 for the MSUM Homecoming celebration. Friday's match is set to start at 7 p.m. and Saturday's will begin at 4 p.m. The team will welcome back the 1990 and 2000 teams for championship reunion years.
