MOORHEAD, Minn. – Another chapter went into the Dragon record books as the 2010 football season came to a close on Saturday afternoon as the Minnesota State University Moorhead football team took a 42-16 loss to the No. 18 St. Cloud State Huskies at Alex Nemzek Stadium.
The Dragons finish the 2010 season with a 2-9 overall record and a 2-8-league tally. The Huskies, who were ranked No. 5 in the region this week will await the results around the nation this week before being seeded in the post-season as they cap their regular season with a 9-2 overall and 9-1 NSIC mark.
It took the Huskies just 1:04 to score as they marched down the field in three plays for 69 yards, largely due to a 52-yard pass from Phillip Klaphake to Fred Williams to start the day's scoring.
The Dragons would answer with three points on their return drive, from the boot of freshman
Wes Kramer from 25-yards out to cap a 6-play, 15-yard drive that took 3:08. The drive was set up on the 23-yard line after
Brandon Thompson returned an SCSU kick-off 59 yards.
SCSU scored on their ensuing possession, as Klaphake and Williams connected again, this time for a six-yard pass with 7:12 left on the clock in the first quarter. The Huskies led at this point, 14-3.
Junior quarterback,
Kevin Koch, threw a 29-yard pass to junior,
Kendall Hendon on a third and seven, in the Dragons following possession that would help set the team up in the Husky territory. Two plays later, Koch completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to senior
Nick Scharpf to cut the lead to 14-9.
The Huskies would go up 21-9 at the beginning of the second quarter, as Williams would catch his third touchdown pass of the game, this one for 27-yards. It would be all the points the Huskies would need for the win. They scored once more before halftime to lead 28-9.
After leading, 35-9, SCSU was forced to punt on a fourth down and 14-yards with 6:17 left in the third quarter, as they were on their own 29 yard line. MSUM's Hendon was waiting for the punt from Matt Compton at the SCSU 48 yard line, where he caught the ball and by the aid of a huge block by
Barik Williams ran the ball in for the first punt return touchdown of the season for the Dragons.
SCSU scored their final points of the game in their next possession on a 6-play, 60-yard drive on a three-yard rush by Mike Walker at the 2:06 mark in the third quarter.
The Dragons had 237 yards on offense, with 186 passing yards. Koch finished the day going 23-for-31 with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Nick Scharpf led the receivers with six catches for 68 yards. Thompson had five catches for 20 yards and Hendon had four catches for 56 yards.
Sophomore punter
Patrick Haynes entered the Dragon record books as he broke the single season record for punts in a season with 74. Randy Bishoff, who had 70 in 1979, held the previous record.
On defense,
Joey Dawson who had 12 tackles led the Dragons.
Mike Mann and
Steve Parks each had eight tackles. Mann had two sacks for a total loss of 15 yards.
