Dragon Volleyball Comes from Behind to End Season With a Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. - It was a memorable final game for the 2010 Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon volleyball team as they came back from a 0-2 deficit to top the Upper Iowa Peacocks, 3-2, at Alex Nemzek Stadium in their final game of the season.

The Dragons end their year 16-12 overall and 12-8 in the league, while Upper Iowa 9-20 and 6-14 in the NSIC. The Peacocks had taken the first match of the season between the two teams on Oct. 30, 3-1, in Fayette, Iowa.

The Dragons suffered from poor hitting percentages in the first two sets as the Peacocks capitalized on the MSUM errors, to go up 2-0 before intermission.

MSUM would not let the deficit hold them back as they began to pull away in the third set after being tied at 10-10, as Laura Tvrdik pounded down one of her four kills in the set. Heidi Lensing followed that with oa service ace, and served three more times as the Dragons built the much needed momentum that helped carried them to the set win.

In the fourth set, the Dragons picked up 14 kills, with Lensing tallying a set-high of six to lead the team to a victory.

The Dragons won the coin toss for the fifth set but did not claim the first point, but he lead would change six times and the set would be tied five times before the Dragons took a lead for a commanding amount of time in the set at the 8-6 mark. MSU Moorhead lead fro the 8-6 mark, until the Peacocks tied the game at 14-14. The battle continued to be back and fourth as the leader would change from MSUM to UIU before the home team claimed the match win at the 20-18 mark.

Lensing ended the day with a season and career high 25 kills in the match, hitting .352. She also had 18 digs, four block assists and a service ace. Tvrdik had 16 kills, six assists and four digs. Leigh Splittstoesser had 61 assists and 13 digs in the match. Meredith Egeland had eight kills, two service aces, seven digs and seven blocks.
