Dragon Women's Basketball Receives Votes in Coaches Poll; Set For Tough Competition

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The toughest competition the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team has faced this season will come to Moorhead on Friday and Saturday as the Dragons host their first conference games at home this weekend.

Both No. 10 Wayne State Wildcats (Neb.) and No. 16 Augustana Vikings (S.D.) will come to Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse to go head-to-head with the Dragons, who received votes in this week's USA Today/ESPN DII Coaches Poll for the first time since early in the 2009-10 season. Each game will begin at 6 p.m.

Dragon Recap
The Dragons picked up two wins last week, topping Dickinson State (N.D.) on Tuesday and coming back after trailing the whole game to top Minnesota-Crookston in the final minutes on Saturday.

On Tuesday, the BlueHawks jumped to an early lead but it was Angie Jetvig who spurred the Dragons comeback, scoring 12 points in the final 10 minutes of the first half to take the lead and the win. Jetvig ended the game with 25 points while Betsy Dickson and Marisa Yernatich each tallied 16.

On Saturday, MSUM took the lead for the first time int he game with 6:25 left to play. The game was tied or a lead was changed five more times before the Dragons took the lead for good at 2:51. Leading by two with under a second left to play, a missed free-throw forced the Golden Eagles to throw the ball off of the rim in their second attempt from the charity stripe to try to tie the game. Betsy Dickson tipped the ball on the rebound not allowing another player to touch it as time expired. Jetvig had 21 points, while Yernatich had 14. Freshman Megan Strese had a career-high in points with 13.

By the Numbers
2 – Behind only regional rival, Metro State (Colo.), the Dragons are second in the nation in rebounding margin as they have a +16.7 margin over their opponents this season
3 – The Dragons have won three straight games over the Augustana Vikings, after opening the series with nine consecutive losses
4 – Angie Jetvig is ranked fourth in the nation in scoring, averaging 21.3 points per game
6 – The number of Dragon women's basketball players currently on the team that have played an entire season of NSIC basketball

Wayne State (Neb.)
The Wildcats, currently ranked No.10 in the nation, moved up three rankings after topping both Northern State (S.D.) and U-Mary (N.D.) last weekend. This season the Wildcats are 7-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.

Junior Ashley Arlen is leading the team as she averages 15.0 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Ally Schwartzwald is leading the team with 3.0 assists per game.


Augustana (S.D.)
The Vikings, after opening the conference season with a loss to Southwest Minnesota State, have rebounded with three victories in league play. Last weekend, they topped Northern State (S.D.) by nine points but just barely snuck by U-Mary, with a two point win.

Megan Doyle leads the Vikings with 16.3 points per game and 4.4 rebounds. Molly Hayes, Alex Feeney and Kristi Board also average double-figures in scoring with 13.0, 12.0 and 10.5 points per game, respectively.

The Series
The Dragons trail both of their opponents this weekend in all-time series tallies, as Wayne State has a narrow margin of 14-13 and Augustana leads 9-3. The Wildcats took the lead last season as they topped the Dragons in the NSIC Tournament, 77-70 on Mar. 3. The Vikings won the first nine games in the series but the Dragons have won three straight, two of which coming in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Tickets are $7 for basketball doubleheaders and can be purchased at the ticket counter in Alex Nemzek Hall. Youth, ages 12 and under are admitted free.
