MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon women's basketball team took a close 63-60 win over No. 16 Augustana (S.D.) in the last few minutes of the game Saturday night at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
After suffering a disappointing loss Friday night to Wayne State College (Neb.), the Dragons had to turn around and play another NSIC giant on Saturday. Augustana started the game ranked sixteenth in the NCAA Division II (USA Today/ESPN) poll.
The first half belonged to the Vikings after breaking and early 3-3 tie on minute into the game. From that point on, the Vikings lead the entire first half with all but one of their points in the first half coming from their starters.
The Vikings carried the momentum into the locker room after Alex Feeney hit a deep three-pointer with 35 seconds left putting Augustana up 39-31 at halftime.
The Dragons would come out firing in the second half beginning with a jumper from
Angie Jetvig to open the half and bring the Dragons within six.
Augustana would answer quickly and push their lead to as much as 11 points with just under ten minutes left in the game. As soon as the Vikings posted that 11 point lead, Dragon point guard Abby Rieter dished an assist to freshman post
Megan Strese to begin chipping away.
Rieter would continue to shine scoring eight points of her ten points in next four minutes including two big free throws to tie the game 60-60 with four minutes remaining.
With 1:35 left to play, senior
Betsy Dickson found teammate
Brittany Mayclin on the arc for a three-pointer, giving the Dragons the lead 63-60. Mayclin wasn't finished as she came up with a steal within seconds of taking the lead, and sealing the victory for MSU Moorhead 63-60.
The Dragon women return to NSIC action on New Years day at Minnesota State University-Mankato, and face Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday Jan. 2.
